Burnout is an exhaustion caused by prolonged or repeated stress. This may affect not only your physical well being but emotional and mental as well. Burnout does not only happen because of spending looong hours at work. It can also occur because of setting a goal and thinking you’re not making progress despite all your efforts. Lack of support group is also one of several factors we can look into.
According to Susan Haas on her article in Psychology Today, in order for a person to be diagnosed with burnout, there are three components that must be present - emotional exhaustion or the feeling of being tired and dreadful all the time; cynicism or the feeling of expecting the worst in everything; and reduced personal efficacy or the lack of self-confidence to finish the job.
If you are starting to see these symptoms, take a deep breath. In this article, we will talk about some of the common ways how you can wash out the burnout:
Be aware of what you’re feeling.
Pay attention to what your mind and body is trying to tell you. Check how your health has been, including your eating habits and spendings.
Take breaks.
Do things that will make you happy - go buy those clothes, take a vacation, sleep as long as you want, or binge watch your favorite series. Give time for yourself and do what you like.
Be positive.
Don't put too much pressure on yourself and keep in mind that things will get better in time. It’s okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from it. Acknowledge all your hard work and be proud of the progress you’re making.
Practice mindfulness.
According to Cambridge Dictionary, this is the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, which creates a feeling of calmness. Fifteen minutes of mindfulness everyday improves your mental health. Listen to your heartbeat, feel your own breathing, or take a stroll around nature. This is the time to forget all your worries.
Balance work and other aspects of life.
Keep in mind that your work is not your world. It’s part of what you do but it won't reflect your persona as a whole. Don’t forget to give your time to the people who need it the most - your family and loved ones. Life is really short, so go and spend more quality time with them before it’s too late.
Not currently experiencing the signs mentioned above does not mean you should not take these tips into consideration. You always need to pay attention to yourself. Take a break, check how you are doing, and reflect on your life to get back on track.
